If you walk across the deserted streets of Bannack, you can discover on your own, the realities of the archaic western civilizations. Bannack State Park is one of the most well preserved ghost towns in Montana. Bannack State Park is the place where the first major gold discovery was made on July 28, 1862.

Bannack State park is one of the registered historic landmarks of USA. The history of Bannack is quite strange, after the gold discovery in Bannack, the population of Bannack rose to about 3000 by 1863. As the price of gold started coming down, the population started moving out of Bannack. The remains in the Bannack State Park consists of fifty odd buildings on the main street of Bannack is a reminder of the famous log and frame structures which are reminiscent of the historic years when the state of Montana was formed.

Every year, the third weekend of July is celebrated as the Bannack day. The day is filled with various activities such as historic displays of the restored remains of the town. The visitor centre in Bannack State Park is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. A TIPI is available for rent from the visitor centers for touring.

The State park is one thousand, two hundred and fifty acres in size and is elevated to five thousand and eight hundred feet above sea level. The campground has a total of 28 sites and a family picnic spot. The park is very well managed with proper toilets, picnic spots as well as other camping and fishing amenities.
