Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area

The Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area was established on October 15 1966 as an act passed by the Congress. The parks formation was followed by the construction of Yellow Dam by the Bureau of Reclamation. This dam was named after the famous crow chairman Robert Yellowtail.

The main objective of building this dam was to harness the water of the Bighom River and turn the variable flow of this stream into a huge and magnificent lake. Bighom Lake is comprised of 55 miles within spectacular Bighorn and the length of approximately sixty miles through Wyoming and Montana.

The recreation Area of the Bighorn Canyon consists of more than 70,000 acres and is located over the northern Wyoming and southern Montana borders. Two visitor centers have been developed in the region along with other added facilities in Fort Smith, Montana and near Lovell in Wyoming. Trout is available for fishing in the Afterbay Lake below the Yellowtail Dam and is also a good place for viewing geese, ducks and other animals throughout the year.

Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area is a huge natural treasure waiting to be discovered. The place not only has wonderful scenery but also a large variety of wildlife. This place also throws up large scope for recreational activities like fishing, boating, ice-fishing and hunting.

Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area also has a large number of campgrounds from where you can choose. The Bighorn Canyon National Park is only one of the few National Parks that provides solitude, serenity and beauty at the same time.
