Cooney Reservoir State Park is one of the most popular recreational areas in the southern part of central Montana. This park has an irrigation reservoir which is a particularly busy place during the summer season.

Cooney Reservoir State Park throws up opportunities for trout and rainbow trout fishing. There are 75 camping sites in the region spread across the entire 289 acres of Cooney State Park. This park is elevated above sea level at 3,300 feet. Cooney Reservoir State Park is situated off the Highway 212, almost 50 miles south of the Billings. Tourists are attracted towards this place due to the wide range of recreational opportunities the irrigation reservoir offers.

The most popular pastimes in the park are water skiing, motor boating and non- motorized boating. While paddling or swimming in the reservoir, people can get a view of the huge Dam that created this reservoir. Cooney Reservoir State Park is also a popular place for bird watching due to presence of birds such as ospreys, hawks, owls and numerous other small birds in this region. Every year this reservoir is fed with 150,000 thousand trout (six-inches in size) by the Department of fish and game!

This makes the reservoir a very popular place for trout fishing purposes. Having a total of 780 surface acres of water and the availability of large varieties of fishes such as sucker, walleye and black crappie this park is a haven for fisherman. A few winter recreational activities such as cross country skiing, ice skating and snowmobiling can also be carried out in this Park.
